When everything falls apart, you don’t need to “bounce back;” you need to rest, find your truth, and take small steps forward. When you’re standing in the rubble you have the right to move into your future at a pace that works for you.
Sometimes, life falls out from under your feet. A diagnosis. A death. A job loss. A moment of reckoning that shows you the old way of living no longer fits. It’s not just hard days or challenging seasons. It’s about collapse, when one big event, or a series of shifts causes the ground under your feet to fall away. You’re not broken. You’re in transition, in liminal space. And you’re allowed to find a way forward that works for you, at a pace that works for you.
Rest - Deeply and Without Shame
We often think of rest as a reward for productivity. But when the ground gives way, rest becomes a lifeline. Rest isn’t only stillness or sleep. It’s movement that feels natural. It’s time in nature, creative play, disengaging from noise, allowing space for grief. It is stepping away from the chaos to enjoy time alone, or with supportive people.
Your body, mind, and spirit need time to recalibrate. That is not laziness. That is wisdom. Resting gives your brain and spirit time to adjust. Resting includes reducing decision making in your day by following simple routines such as the same breakfast daily, a weekly call with a friend, or wearing your favorite outfits repeatedly. You have the right to rest in ways that are nourishing for you.
Tell Yourself the Truth
Take time to sort out what your thoughts and feelings are at this time. Journal, talk with supportive people, or talk out loud to yourself to process your truth. Not the tidy version, not the “should” version, but the raw, complicated truth. The one where you share how you really, really feel and what you are thinking about your current situation.
Maybe something fell apart. Maybe you’re exhausted. Maybe the life you worked so hard to build no longer fits. That’s not failure. That’s information. Your truth opens the door to compassion for yourself.
Explore Moving Forward
You may not “bounce back.” You may not want to. The old version of life may not have been sustainable. Moving forward requires letting go of what was and considering what is. Resilience is more than endurance. It’s the capacity to listen to yourself, to adapt as your needs change, and to imagine new possibilities when the old ones fall away. Resilience includes claiming the right to grow by moving forward. Take time to consider your next steps at a pace that works for you. You don’t need a grand plan. You need small steps that feel right for you.
When your life falls apart, or you realize your current situation is unsustainable, resilience looks like rest, slowing down to hear your truth, and exploring ways to move forward. You can’t hurry up and fix things. Wisdom is stepping back during this liminal time to restore your energy, connect with yourself and others to hear your truth, and take small steps to find routines and plans that work for you. You are not broken, you are in transition, you are managing life.
Peace,
Laura
