When the Holidays get Hijacked

Holiday Blues are Normal. 

During the time of “Merry and Bright” you might be feeling neither of those. I hope that you experience joy, connection, and happiness over the next month. You are likely to experience, as always, a full range of human emotions. As I write this, I feel tired and frustrated due to a December cold. That is why this is such a short blog. I want to remind us all that it is normal to feel so many ways no matter the calendar.  

It can feel isolating to experience sadness, grief, anger, or other uncomfortable emotions during a holiday season. Marketing of all sorts encourages us to feel merry and bright as we shop our way to happiness. Social media posts celebrate gatherings and decorations which are lovely to see. If your reality does not fit the holiday expectations, know that you are not alone. It is ok ask others for what you need, whether it be moral support, a walk, or a chat.  

Be gentle with yourself. Know that you are a miracle as a one-of-a-kind person living a real life, not a holiday movie. Stay hydrated, take medication as needed, and try to get enough sleep. Reach out, or take a break, whichever is most needed at the moment. You’ve got this.
