Advice for May Gardeners… and Everybody

May 27, 2026

Naming things is powerful; it gives you a handle to grab on to and manage ideas. Lower Case Liminal Change is a process that happens after you manage a troublesome bump in life. The bump is an unwelcome interruption that you can manage, but which leaves behind a noise or rattle in your forward momentum. The noise is the thoughts or emotions that won’t go away even though you have the situation under control. You feel uneasy and keep thinking about it in the background of your life. Once you sort out what is going on with the noise, you can take deliberate steps to address your concerns. Steps lead to change, and in the end, you have a new normal.

This is a cycle, not steps that you take once and are done. You name the pain, notice your reactions, and make choices in an iterative process. Recognizing where you are in the process allows you to be deliberate about supporting your life.

Name the Pain

Sure, the bump is manageable; there is gratitude that you have the resources to take care of things and continue on your way. But it wasn’t fun, it hurt, was scary, caused some damage, or triggered an old wound. Pausing to clarify for yourself that you hit an unwanted bump allows you to name the impact it had on your journey.

Notice Your Reactions

Your thoughts and feelings about the bump are not overreaction, silly, or a bother. They are your inner self wanting to be heard. The bump stirred up new or old ideas about your current journey. Unpack them as a way of gathering information. You don’t have to act on them immediately; listening to yourself is a powerful way to care for who you are now.

Make Choices

As you unpack your thoughts and feelings, you can better identify ways to take steps to meet your needs. You can stop or start activities, experiment with something new, build a new resource, or make a quick adjustment. These choices will lead to a cascade of change. Your new normal will take some time to come to fruition.

This process of naming, noticing, and choosing is a cycle. Pay attention to your internal reactions, to support your own journey. Bumps are going to happen. Your thoughts and feelings about them are a great source of information about ways you might create change toward your own thriving. The process of Lower-Case Liminal Change occurs many times in a lifespan. Each time is an opportunity to learn, adjust, and focus on what makes the most sense for the next stage of your journey.

Peace,

Laura
