Burnout: An Introduction

January 7, 2026

Here we go, another year in an unpredictable world. There is so little that you can control and so many ways that things can turn out. You are in charge of your own attention and focus which will greatly influence your personal experience of 2026.

You are a human who deserves to have a good life just like every other human.  When you are doing well you have energy to connect with others, to bring out your own particular gifts, and to care for yourself. If everyone were healthy and thriving, the misery index on this planet would go down. Focus on your own thriving as a priority.

Thriving is more than surviving; it is experiencing well-being in many areas of life. It involves finding those things that bring you joy and a sense of purpose and doubling down on them. You begin with the basics that everyone needs: physical and emotional safety, connections with people who care, and access to resources. Then you move on to those things that uniquely bring you joy: your dog, your favorite music, reading while wrapped in a cozy blanket, or eating chocolate covered marzipan. Some years you will focus on basics, other years you will have a big pursuit that matters to you. You may want to support a cause, write a book, or care for others. To thrive, identify what would increase your well-being and make that a priority.

You Can

Do what you can. Don’t give away your power. If you are tired, move slowly. Take baby steps alternating with rest. If you are easily distracted, use lists or co-working to build accountability into your days. If you are bored, find a bigger more exciting project to launch.  Yes, the world is troubled. You can create beauty where you are, and you can join with others to make a difference in your community. Wherever you are in your life, whatever your circumstances, notice what you can do.

Bit by Bit

Focus on a few priorities at a time. Annual goals are usually too much, 365 is a lot of days. Your brain prefers predictability, so pick one or two goals and focus on them for a shorter period of time. If you have a long-term goal, plan then make room for imperfection. Let’s say you want to walk in nature three times a week. You then get sick and don’t poke your nose outside for weeks. That is normal. As you run to the pharmacy, stop to pat a tree or notice a bird. Get back to walks when you can. Restart as many times as you need to.

Start with your own thriving as you are a human who deserves well-being just as much as every other human. You can use your resilience to make a difference in your life. Focus on what you can do, not on all the reasons it might be hard.   When you get sidetracked from your plans, refocus and start again. From your own growth you can make a difference in ways that matter to you.

I wish you all the best in 2026 and hope to connect with you this year. You are welcome to email me at [email protected] to share your thoughts or goals. If you are not on our email list, please join us.
